NGC 662
NGC 662 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Andromeda. It resides approximately 92 million light-years from Earth.
Characteristics:
NGC 662 is classified as a SBbc galaxy, indicating it's a spiral galaxy with a bar-shaped structure in its center (SB) and loosely wound spiral arms (bc). Its apparent magnitude is around 13, making it a faint object best observed through larger telescopes.
Discovery:
The galaxy was discovered on November 22, 1886, by the American astronomer Lewis Swift.
Associated Features:
While not directly gravitationally bound, NGC 662 appears in the same general region of the sky as the galaxy NGC 660, a polar-ring galaxy. This proximity might lead to the galaxies being studied together in investigations of galaxy distribution and evolution. However, the significant difference in their radial velocities suggests they are not interacting.
