Peter Burge (cricketer)

Peter Burge (20 May 1932 – 16 March 2001) was an Australian cricketer who played in 42 Test matches between 1955 and 1966. A right-handed batsman, he was known for his elegant strokeplay and strong driving.

Burge was born in Ipswich, Queensland and represented Queensland in Sheffield Shield cricket from 1953. He made his Test debut against England in the 1955 Ashes series. He scored his maiden Test century against India in 1956 and went on to become a mainstay of the Australian batting lineup.

Burge captained Queensland for several seasons and also led Australia in one Test match against England in 1963 when Richie Benaud was injured. In that match he scored 93 runs. He retired from first-class cricket in 1966.

After his playing career, Burge became a cricket administrator and commentator. He also served as a Queensland state selector.

Burge was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame in 2009.
