Takashi Ono (gymnast)
Takashi Ono (小野 喬, Ono Takashi, born July 26, 1931, in Noshiro, Akita) is a retired Japanese gymnast. He competed in the Olympics in 1952, 1956, 1960 and 1964, winning five gold, four silver, and four bronze medals, making him one of Japan's most decorated Olympians in gymnastics.
Ono was a key member of the dominant Japanese men's gymnastics team during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He is best known for his exceptional consistency and his strong performances on the horizontal bar.
His Olympic medals include:
- 1952 Helsinki: Bronze medal in the team event.
- 1956 Melbourne: Silver medal in the team event, bronze medal on the horizontal bar.
- 1960 Rome: Gold medal in the horizontal bar, gold medal in the team event, silver medal in the all-around, bronze medal in the pommel horse.
- 1964 Tokyo: Gold medal in the team event, gold medal on the horizontal bar, silver medal in the all-around, bronze medal in the floor exercise.
Beyond the Olympics, Ono also achieved success in other international competitions. He was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1998. Ono's contributions significantly influenced the development of gymnastics in Japan and solidified the country's reputation as a powerhouse in the sport. He has remained involved with the sport, often serving as a coach and administrator.
