Goodea

Goodea is a genus of fish in the family Goodeidae, endemic to Mexico. These fish are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The genus is part of a larger group known as goodeids, all of which share this livebearing characteristic and are found primarily in the Mexican Plateau.

Goodea species are generally small to medium in size, with varying body shapes and color patterns. They inhabit a range of freshwater habitats, including lakes, rivers, and springs. Their diet typically consists of algae, invertebrates, and small plant matter.

Many Goodea species are considered threatened or endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, and competition from introduced species. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these unique fish and their native environments. Identifying individual species within the Goodea genus can be challenging due to variations in morphology and overlapping distributions. Some previously recognized species have also been reclassified based on genetic and morphological data. The study and conservation of Goodea fish are important for maintaining the biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems in Mexico.
