James Darcy (1617–1673)

James Darcy (1617–1673) was an English politician and Member of Parliament. He belonged to the Darcy family of Yorkshire, a lineage with long-standing political influence.

Born into the landed gentry, Darcy's political career commenced during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War. He initially sided with the Royalist cause, supporting King Charles I against Parliament. However, following the Royalist defeat, he made his peace with the Commonwealth government.

Darcy represented the county of Yorkshire in the Protectorate Parliaments of 1654, 1656, and 1659. He demonstrated a pragmatism that allowed him to navigate the shifting political landscape of the Interregnum. Records indicate his active participation in parliamentary debates and committees, showing engagement with the legislative process of the time.

Following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Darcy was pardoned for his earlier Royalist allegiance and continued to play a role in local affairs. While his national political influence diminished, he retained his position and standing within Yorkshire society until his death in 1673. His life reflects the complex allegiances and adaptations required of individuals during a period of profound political upheaval in English history. He is a notable example of a figure whose actions spanned both the Royalist and Commonwealth periods.
