Dibbs ministry (1889)
The Dibbs ministry (1889) refers to the New South Wales (NSW) government led by Premier Sir George Dibbs, which held office briefly in 1889. Specifically, it was Dibbs' first term as Premier.
This ministry was formed following the defeat of the Parkes ministry in a vote of no confidence. Dibbs, a Protectionist, formed a coalition government with support from various factions in the NSW Legislative Assembly. The primary policy debates during this period centered on tariffs (free trade versus protectionism) and land reform.
The Dibbs ministry was short-lived, lasting only a few months. It faced considerable opposition and political instability. Ultimately, the ministry was defeated, and Sir Henry Parkes returned to power, forming his own ministry later the same year. The brevity of this government means that it did not enact any major, lasting legislative changes, but it did contribute to the ongoing political maneuvering and policy debates of the late 19th century in NSW.
