Bileća

Bileća is a town and municipality located in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated in the southeastern part of the country, in the historical region of Herzegovina.

Geography: Bileća lies in a karst region, characterized by rocky terrain, sinkholes, and limited surface water. The Bileća Lake, an artificial reservoir created by a dam on the Trebišnjica River, is a significant feature of the area.

History: The area around Bileća has been inhabited since ancient times. During the Middle Ages, it was part of various Bosnian and Serbian entities. Under Ottoman rule, it was an important center for trade and administration. In the 20th century, Bileća was part of Yugoslavia, and subsequently, after the Bosnian War, it became part of Republika Srpska. The town is known for being the location of a JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) barracks and training center during the socialist era.
