USS Cleveland (CL-55)

The USS Cleveland (CL-55) was the lead ship of the Cleveland-class light cruisers built for the United States Navy during World War II. She was commissioned in June 1942 and served extensively in the Pacific Theater.

Cleveland participated in numerous major campaigns, including the invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch), for which she earned her first battle star. Following North Africa, she transferred to the Pacific, participating in actions in the Solomon Islands, including the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay. She continued to support operations throughout the Pacific, including the Philippines campaign, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Throughout her service, Cleveland proved to be a versatile and effective warship, providing anti-aircraft fire, shore bombardment, and escort duties. For her service in World War II, she earned a total of 13 battle stars, making her one of the most decorated US Navy ships of the war.

Following the end of World War II, Cleveland was placed in reserve. She was eventually stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1959 and scrapped shortly thereafter. While the physical ship no longer exists, her name and wartime record remain a significant part of US Naval history.
