Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Skopje)
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Skopje, North Macedonia. It serves as the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Skopje.
The cathedral's history is linked to the presence of the Sisters of Charity in Skopje, who established a hospital and invited the Jesuits to build a church. The original church, built after the 1910 Skopje earthquake, was destroyed during the 1963 Skopje earthquake.
The current cathedral was constructed in 1977, designed by the architect Jan Stanislav Witkiewicz. It is a modern building with a distinctive cruciform shape and a bronze statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus above the entrance. The interior is notable for its simplicity and the use of natural light.
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus continues to be an important center for the Catholic community in Skopje and North Macedonia, hosting regular services and religious events.
