Choe Yun

Choe Yun (최윤, born October 26, 1953) is a prominent South Korean novelist known for her exploration of social issues, particularly the psychological impact of violence and political oppression on individuals. Her works often delve into themes of trauma, memory, and the search for identity in the aftermath of significant historical events, such as the Gwangju Uprising of 1980.

Born in Seoul, Choe Yun studied French Literature at Sogang University. She began publishing her works in the late 1980s and quickly gained recognition for her distinctive style and insightful portrayal of marginalized voices.

Her notable works include the novella "There a Petal Silently Falls" (저기 소리없이 한 점 꽃잎이 지고, 1988), which vividly depicts the horrors and lasting effects of the Gwangju Uprising. This work is considered a significant contribution to Korean literature and has been widely translated and studied. Other significant works include "Gray Snowman" (회색 눈사람), "A Dream of the Knife" (칼의 꿈), and "The Thirteen Children" (열세 아이).
