Jukdo (island)
Jukdo (죽도, 竹嶼) is a small, uninhabited volcanic island located adjacent to Ulleungdo, in the East Sea (Sea of Japan). It is part of South Korea's North Gyeongsang Province, and specifically falls under the jurisdiction of Ulleung County. The name Jukdo translates to "Bamboo Island" in Korean, referring to the abundant bamboo that grows there.
Jukdo lies approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of Ulleungdo, making it the closest landmass to Ulleungdo, and offers clear views of the larger island on a clear day. The island is relatively flat on top, facilitating the growth of bamboo. It's accessible by boat from Ulleungdo, typically via Dodong Port, and offers a scenic hiking trail circling the island.
The island's strategic location and proximity to Ulleungdo have made it an important part of Ulleungdo's ecosystem and tourism. While uninhabited, it is typically visited by tourists and serves as an observation point. It is also sometimes used for agricultural purposes, particularly related to bamboo cultivation.
Jukdo is not to be confused with other islands of the same name found in Korea or the surrounding region.
