When (band)

When was a Norwegian rock band formed in Bergen in 1982. The band's core members were Lars Pedersen (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Steinar Ytrehus (drums). When were known for their atmospheric and experimental sound, blending elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and art rock.

Their early releases were characterized by a raw, energetic sound, often compared to bands like The Velvet Underground and early Pink Floyd. As the band evolved, their sound became more complex and layered, incorporating elements of krautrock and ambient music. Pedersen's distinctive vocals and introspective lyrics were a key component of their sound.

When released a string of albums throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, including notable works such as In the Oil (1985), Dreams We Control (1993), Miscellany (1996), and Modern Art (2001). They gained a dedicated following in Norway and Europe, and toured extensively. Despite critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase, they remained largely an underground phenomenon.

While When never achieved mainstream commercial success, they are considered an influential band in the Norwegian alternative rock scene, and their music continues to be appreciated for its originality and artistic vision. The band officially dissolved in 2009.
