Hemelum

Hemelum is a village in the municipality of Súdwest Fryslân, in the province of Friesland, Netherlands. It is located approximately 7 kilometers west of Workum.

The village's name is believed to derive from "Hemel," meaning "heaven" or "sky," though the exact etymology is debated. Hemelum is known for its rural character and its proximity to the IJsselmeer.

Historically, Hemelum was part of the former municipality of Nijefurd before the municipal reorganizations in Friesland. The economy of the village is primarily based on agriculture and tourism, benefitting from its location near water sports facilities.
