Silambu

Silambu (Tamil: சிலம்பு) is a Tamil word referring to an anklet, particularly one made of hollow metal containing pebbles or other materials that create a jingling sound when worn. Silambu are traditionally worn by women, especially dancers, in South India, particularly in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, and in Sri Lanka.

The silambu holds cultural and historical significance, often featuring prominently in literature and the performing arts. Notably, the Silappatikaram, one of the Five Great Epics of Tamil Literature, is named after the anklet. The epic revolves around the story of Kannagi and the injustice she faces when her husband is wrongly accused of stealing the queen's silambu. The silambu's contents (rubies in Kannagi's anklet, as opposed to pearls in the queen's) prove her husband's innocence, leading to a dramatic climax.

The silambu is not merely an ornament but also a functional element in dance forms such as Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. The rhythmic sounds produced by the anklets accentuate the dancer's movements and contribute to the overall musicality of the performance. The weight of the silambu can also impact the dancer's steps and balance.

Beyond performance contexts, silambu can also be worn as everyday jewelry. The design and materials used to create silambu vary, ranging from simple metal bands to elaborately decorated pieces adorned with gemstones and intricate carvings. The craftsmanship involved in making silambu is often a generational skill passed down within artisan communities.
