JS Ōnami

JS Ōnami (大波) is a Japanese destroyer of the Takanami-class (also known as the Improved Murasame-class). She is the fourth ship of her class.

The Takanami-class destroyers are multi-mission destroyers designed to serve as general-purpose escorts for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). They represent an improvement over the preceding Murasame-class, incorporating enhanced stealth features and improved combat capabilities.

JS Ōnami, like her sister ships, is equipped with a variety of sensors and weapons systems, including anti-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, and a 127mm gun. These systems enable her to engage a wide range of threats, from aircraft and surface vessels to submarines. She also features a helicopter landing deck and hangar, allowing her to operate naval helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and other missions.

The ship is named after Ōnami (大波), meaning "big wave" in Japanese. She was laid down on May 17, 2000, launched on September 20, 2001, and commissioned into service on March 13, 2003. JS Ōnami has participated in numerous exercises and operations, contributing to the security and stability of the region.
