Lionheart (video game)
Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader is an action role-playing game developed by Reflexive Entertainment and published by Black Isle Studios, released in 2003 for Microsoft Windows. It is set in an alternate history version of 12th-century Europe, where magic is real and coexists with humanity. The game begins after Richard the Lionheart's failed attempt to conquer Jerusalem.
The game features a skill-based character development system where players allocate points into various abilities categorized under several skill trees, including combat, stealth, magic, and diplomacy. Character creation allows players to choose from several different races and customize their starting skills and attributes. These choices heavily influence gameplay and available quest solutions.
Lionheart incorporates a morality system that affects the character's alignment and influences interactions with NPCs and the storyline. Decisions made during quests and dialogue can shift the character towards either a more benevolent or malevolent path.
The game world is divided into several regions, each with its own distinct environments, characters, and quests. The main story involves investigating a conspiracy that threatens the balance of power between the magical and mundane realms. Players interact with historical figures and mythical creatures throughout their journey.
While boasting an ambitious skill system and detailed world, Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader was met with mixed reviews upon release. Criticisms were often directed towards its technical issues, including bugs and performance problems, as well as perceived imbalances in its skill system and uneven pacing. Despite these drawbacks, the game retains a cult following due to its unique setting and character customization options.
