Alexander Stuart (Canadian politician)

Alexander Stuart (born c. 1797, died January 27, 1868) was a lawyer, judge, and political figure in Lower Canada and Canada East.

Stuart was born in Quebec City, the son of Andrew Stuart and Penelope Connolly. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1819, practicing law in Quebec City. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1841.

Stuart was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for the riding of Quebec in 1820. He supported the administration and opposed the patriote movement. He was re-elected in 1824, 1827, 1830, 1834, and 1838. He served as Solicitor General for Lower Canada from 1825 to 1830 and again from 1837 to 1839.

After the union of Upper and Lower Canada, Stuart represented Quebec City in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1841 to 1844. He was not a member of the Executive Council.

In 1852, he was appointed a judge of the Superior Court for Lower Canada and later a puisne judge of the Court of Queen's Bench. He retired from the bench in 1862.

He was married to Félicité Antoinette Ermatinger. His son, Andrew Stuart, also became a lawyer and politician.
