Scawby

Scawby is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Brigg and is near the A15 road.

The village has a history dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is mentioned as "Scallebi." The name is believed to be of Old Norse origin, potentially meaning "Skalli's farm" or "the farm by the shelter/hut."

Historically, Scawby was an agricultural community. The village church, St Hybald's, is a notable landmark and features elements of Norman and later architectural styles. St Hybald, to whom the church is dedicated, was a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon abbot.

Scawby also boasts a significant historic house, Scawby Hall, the ancestral home of the Nelthorpe family. The hall is a Grade II* listed building and has undergone several phases of construction and renovation over the centuries.

The population of Scawby, according to the 2011 census, was approximately 2,279. The village has a primary school, local shops, and other amenities, serving both the local community and the surrounding rural area. The parish also includes the hamlet of Hibaldstow.
