Cantus (Norwegian female choir)
Cantus is a world-renowned Norwegian female vocal ensemble based in Trondheim. Founded in 1986 by conductor Tove Ramlo-Ystad, the choir is known for its distinctive sound, characterized by clarity, precision, and a vibrant, expressive tone. Cantus’s repertoire spans a wide range of musical genres, including classical, contemporary, folk music, and sacred works, often featuring pieces written specifically for the ensemble.
The choir has achieved international acclaim through numerous recordings, concerts, and collaborations. They have toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. Their commitment to musical excellence and innovative programming has earned them several awards and accolades, including nominations for the Grammy Award.
Cantus operates without a permanent conductor, fostering a collaborative and democratic artistic process. The singers themselves take on a significant role in shaping the choir’s artistic direction and interpretation of the music. This unique approach contributes to the choir's distinctive sound and its reputation for engaging and emotionally resonant performances.
The choir's discography includes recordings on the BIS Records label, widely praised for their technical quality and artistic merit. Cantus actively promotes Norwegian choral music and collaborates with contemporary composers to expand the repertoire for female voices. They are considered a leading exponent of the Norwegian choral tradition and a significant contributor to the international choral music scene.
