The Love Bug (1997 film)
The Love Bug is a 1997 American made-for-television comedy film and a remake of the 1968 Disney film of the same name. It stars Bruce Campbell, Dean Jones (who starred in the original 1968 film), and Alexandra Wentworth.
The film follows the adventures of Herbie, a sentient 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, and a new owner who rediscovers the car's racing potential. Herbie is found in a junkyard by Hank Cooper (Campbell), a failed race car driver working as a mechanic. Herbie's magical abilities and personality quickly become apparent, leading to a series of humorous and exciting situations.
The plot revolves around Hank entering Herbie in a stock car race against a rival, Simon Moore III, played by John Stanton. Dean Jones reprises his role as Jim Douglas, now a doctor, offering guidance and assistance to Hank and Herbie. Alexandra Wentworth plays Alex Borgstedt, a potential love interest for Hank.
Compared to the original film, the 1997 version features updated special effects and a slightly more modern storyline. However, it retains the core elements of Herbie's personality, his racing prowess, and the themes of friendship and overcoming adversity. The film was broadcast on ABC as part of The Wonderful World of Disney anthology series.
