Battle of Grudziądz (1659)

The Battle of Grudziądz (also known as the Battle of Graudenz) was a battle fought between Sweden and Poland-Lithuania on August 29-30, 1659, during the Second Northern War (also known as the Deluge in Poland). The battle took place near the town of Grudziądz (Graudenz) in Royal Prussia.

The Swedish forces, commanded by General Lorens Creutz, attempted to lift the Polish-Lithuanian siege of Grudziądz, which was held by a Swedish garrison. The Polish-Lithuanian army, led by Hetman Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski and Jan Sobieski (future King John III Sobieski), successfully repelled the Swedish attack.

The battle resulted in a Polish-Lithuanian victory, forcing Creutz to retreat and solidifying the Polish-Lithuanian control over the Vistula River valley in that region. Although not a decisive engagement in the overall war, the Battle of Grudziądz was significant in that it prevented the Swedes from reinforcing their positions and helped turn the tide in favor of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the latter stages of the war. The battle is a notable example of the improved Polish-Lithuanian military performance following the early setbacks of the Deluge.
