The Prince of Egypt (musical)
The Prince of Egypt is a stage musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Philip LaZebnik. Based on the 1998 DreamWorks Animation film of the same name, and drawing heavily from the biblical Book of Exodus, the musical tells the story of Moses and Ramses II, two brothers raised as princes of Egypt, who ultimately find themselves on opposing sides of a divinely-ordained struggle.
The musical features a score including original songs and some of the songs featured in the animated film, notably "When You Believe," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The plot closely follows the film's narrative, depicting Moses's discovery of his Hebrew heritage, his exile from Egypt, his encounter with God, and his subsequent return to liberate his people from slavery.
Notable productions include a workshop production at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in 2013, followed by professional premieres at the Fredericia Teater in Denmark in 2018 and the Dominion Theatre in London's West End in 2020. The musical has garnered positive reviews for its score, design, and emotional resonance, although some critics have noted similarities to the film and potential for pacing issues in the stage adaptation. It has been nominated for several awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
