Bill Austin (American football, born 1928)
Bill Austin (born November 25, 1928, in Roseburg, Oregon) is a former American football player and coach. He played offensive guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Giants (1951-1959) and the Washington Redskins (1960-1964). He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection (1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959) and a member of the Giants' NFL Championship teams in 1956.
Following his playing career, Austin transitioned to coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Green Bay Packers. He was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1969 to 1971, compiling a record of 24-18. He also served as the offensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Seattle Seahawks. Austin is credited with innovative offensive line techniques.
