HMNZS Endeavour (1944)
HMNZS Endeavour (1944) was a Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) stores ship. Originally built as USS Natchaug (AOG-54), a gasoline tanker for the United States Navy during World War II, she was transferred to the RNZN in 1944 under the Lend-Lease program. She served primarily in the Pacific theater, providing crucial logistical support to Allied forces.
Upon transfer to New Zealand, she was renamed HMNZS Endeavour, continuing a historical association with the name in New Zealand naval history, most notably with Captain James Cook's ship HMS Endeavour.
Endeavour's main role was to transport fuel, provisions, and other essential supplies to forward operating bases and naval units across the Pacific. She played a vital role in sustaining the Allied offensive against Japan.
Following the end of World War II, HMNZS Endeavour continued to serve the RNZN, supporting peacetime operations and exercises. She was eventually returned to the United States Navy in 1946. The Natchaug was sold into commercial service in 1947.
