Arshak II (opera)

Arshak II is an opera in five acts by composer Tigran Chukhajian, with a libretto by Tovmas Terzian based on the life of King Arsaces II (Arshak II) of Armenia (reigned 350-368 AD). It is considered the first Armenian opera.

The opera premiered on November 29, 1868, at the Zmiryan Theatre in Istanbul, Turkey, with an Italian orchestra conducted by the composer. It was originally written in Italian and performed in that language. Later, the opera was translated into Armenian, and a revised version was staged in Yerevan in 1945, becoming a cornerstone of Armenian national opera.

Arshak II tells a story of political intrigue, betrayal, and love, centered around the Armenian king Arshak II and his struggles against internal enemies and external threats from Persia. Key characters include Arshak II, his wife Olympia, the treacherous Prince Gnel, and the Persian King Shapur.

The opera's music features a blend of Western European operatic traditions and elements of Armenian folk music. Notable arias and ensembles have become popular pieces in Armenian classical music.

Arshak II holds significant cultural importance in Armenia as a symbol of national identity and artistic achievement. Performances of the opera continue to be a vital part of Armenian musical life.
