HMS Audacious (S122)
HMS Audacious (S122) is the second Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarine in the Royal Navy. She was built by BAE Systems Submarines at Barrow-in-Furness and commissioned on 23 September 2020.
Audacious is designed for a variety of roles, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and support for land forces. Her armament includes Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles. She is powered by a Rolls-Royce PWR 2 reactor, which allows her to operate submerged for extended periods without needing to refuel.
Like the other Astute-class submarines, Audacious incorporates advanced stealth technology to reduce her acoustic signature, making her more difficult to detect. She also boasts a highly advanced sonar suite, providing enhanced capabilities for detecting and tracking other vessels. Her crew typically numbers around 98 officers and ratings.
The commissioning of Audacious significantly enhances the Royal Navy's underwater warfare capabilities, contributing to the UK's overall maritime security posture. She represents a key asset in maintaining a credible and effective submarine force.
