1872 (comic book)
1872 is a Marvel Comics limited series and storyline published in 2015 as part of the Secret Wars event. Written by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Evan "Doc" Shaner, it reimagines various Marvel superheroes and villains within a Wild West setting during the titular year.
The storyline is set in the Battleworld domain of Timely, a frontier town ruled by Mayor Wilson Fisk, a ruthless and corrupt figure. Familiar characters are re-imagined with Old West archetypes. Steve Rogers is a U.S. Marshal, Tony Stark is an inventor, Bruce Banner is the town doctor, and Ben Urich is the local newspaperman.
The plot centers around Marshal Rogers' attempts to maintain order in Timely and his growing suspicion of Fisk's nefarious activities. He is aided by other residents of Timely, including Red Wolf and Doc Holliday (another re-imagined hero). The story also features appearances by other Marvel characters adapted to the 1872 setting, often as bandits, ranchers, or saloon patrons. The overall narrative deals with themes of justice, corruption, and the struggle for survival in a lawless environment, mirroring elements of both classic Westerns and established Marvel lore.
The series consists of four issues and forms part of the larger Secret Wars storyline, where various realities are merged and reshaped by Doctor Doom. The ending of 1872 ties into the broader Secret Wars narrative, and the fates of the characters and Timely are determined by the resolution of the event.
