Walrus Island (Pribilof Islands)
Walrus Island is a small island, one of the four main islands comprising the Pribilof Islands, located in the Bering Sea, part of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated approximately 17 miles east of St. Paul Island.
The island is uninhabited by humans, and its primary significance lies in its role as a critical habitat for marine mammals, particularly northern fur seals and, as its name suggests, Pacific walruses. It serves as a major haul-out site for these animals, especially during the breeding season.
The island's ecosystem is protected as part of the Pribilof Islands Unit of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This designation underscores the importance of preserving the unique wildlife and habitats found on Walrus Island and the surrounding Pribilof Islands.
Access to Walrus Island is highly restricted to protect the sensitive wildlife populations. Scientific research and monitoring activities are conducted to study the ecology of the island and the populations of fur seals and walruses that depend on it.
