Arriva is a multinational public transport company headquartered in Sunderland, England. It operates bus, train, tram, and waterbus services across 14 European countries.
Overview
Arriva is one of the largest passenger transport operators in Europe, employing over 38,000 people and operating a fleet of approximately 15,000 buses, 700 trains, and 80 trams. Its parent company is Deutsche Bahn, the German national railway operator.
History
The company originated as Cowie Group, a used car dealership founded in Sunderland in 1938 by Tom Cowie. It expanded into bus operation in the 1980s, acquiring a number of smaller bus companies following deregulation of the bus market in the United Kingdom. The company was renamed Arriva in 1997. Deutsche Bahn acquired Arriva in 2010.
