R2 expressway (Slovakia)

The R2 expressway (Rýchlostná cesta R2) is a planned and partially constructed expressway in Slovakia. It will run in a general north-south direction across central and southern Slovakia, connecting Trenčín in the northwest to Koštany nad Turcom, and then continuing southwards through Zvolen and Lučenec towards the Hungarian border near Fil'akovo.

The primary purpose of the R2 is to provide a faster and safer alternative to the existing road network, improving connectivity between regions and facilitating economic development. It is intended to relieve congestion on existing roads and enhance transportation efficiency.

Construction of the R2 has been underway in stages, with some sections already open to traffic. The project faces challenges including funding availability, environmental considerations, and land acquisition. The completion timeline for the entire expressway remains uncertain.

The R2 expressway forms part of the broader Slovak expressway network and connects to other important transportation arteries, such as the D1 and R1 expressways. Upon completion, it is expected to significantly improve transportation infrastructure in central and southern Slovakia. The expressway is managed by the National Highway Company (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, NDS).
