Dha (sword)

The dha (Burmese: ဓား; Shan: လၵ်းသservice; Jingpho: nhtam) is a single-edged sword or knife traditionally used in Southeast Asia, primarily in Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Yunnan, Laos, Cambodia, and Assam. It is known by different names in different regions, including darb or daap in Thailand, dâp in Lao, and krabi in some parts of Thailand (though krabi more commonly refers to a different style of sword).

The dha is characterized by its long, gently curving blade, typically made of steel. The length of the blade can vary considerably, ranging from short knives to swords exceeding a meter in length. The hilt is typically made of wood, bone, ivory, or metal, and often lacks a guard. Hilts are usually cylindrical or slightly tapered. The method of attaching the blade to the hilt can vary greatly, some employing a tang construction and others utilizing a socket. Scabbards are usually made of wood, often decorated with metal bands, carvings, or lacquer.

The dha is historically used as both a weapon and a tool. Its versatility has made it a common implement for warfare, hunting, agriculture, and general utility. The dha also holds cultural significance, often used in traditional dances, martial arts (such as Burmese Bando), and ceremonies. The craftsmanship and ornamentation of the dha can reflect the status and skill of its owner or maker. Variations in blade shape, hilt design, and ornamentation are common across different ethnic groups and regions, resulting in a diverse range of dha styles.
