Ryan Shay
Ryan Shay (May 4, 1979 – November 3, 2007) was an American long-distance runner. He was a prominent marathoner and national champion. Shay tragically died during the 2008 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City.
Shay achieved significant success in his running career, including winning the 2003 U.S. Marathon Championship in Birmingham, Alabama. He also represented the United States at the 2003 Pan American Games, finishing fourth. He was known for his dedication and competitiveness in the sport of marathon running.
His death during the Olympic Trials was attributed to cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart and scarring. The tragedy brought attention to cardiac issues in athletes and the importance of screening for potential heart problems. The Ryan Shay Memorial Run has been established in his memory. He was married to Alicia Craig, also a professional runner.
