USS Porcupine (1813)

The USS Porcupine was a schooner that served in the United States Navy during the War of 1812. Built in 1813 at Vergennes, Vermont, she was designed for service on Lake Champlain. Porcupine's primary role was to support American naval operations on the lake, including transportation of troops, supplies, and performing reconnaissance.

During the Battle of Plattsburgh (also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain) on September 11, 1814, Porcupine played a supporting, though not directly combative, role. She was stationed with the rest of the American fleet under the command of Commodore Thomas Macdonough and contributed to the overall American victory, which proved strategically significant in hindering British efforts to invade New York.

Following the conclusion of the War of 1812, Porcupine, like many vessels of the time, was decommissioned. Her exact fate and details of disposal are not extensively documented in available naval records, but it's likely she was sold or repurposed after her naval service ended. Her historical significance lies in her contribution to the U.S. Navy's efforts on Lake Champlain during a critical period in American history.
