Pati (rest house)

A pati, also spelled patee, is a type of traditional rest house found primarily in Nepal and India. These structures are simple shelters, often constructed from local materials like stone, mud, and wood, and are provided freely for travelers, pilgrims, and other individuals seeking temporary respite from their journeys. Patis are typically situated along popular trails, near temples, or in village squares.

They serve not only as places to rest and sleep but also as communal spaces where people can socialize, share meals, and seek shelter from inclement weather. Many patis are endowed by wealthy individuals or families as acts of charity, reflecting the cultural emphasis on hospitality and providing for the needs of others, especially travelers.
