Hughie Hearne
Hughie Hearne (born circa 1929, died March 4, 2008) was an Irish traditional fiddler. He was a highly respected and influential figure in the Sligo fiddling style, renowned for his distinctive playing, repertoire, and teaching.
Hearne learned his music from his family, particularly his father and uncles, who were also accomplished musicians. He drew inspiration from recordings of earlier Sligo masters like Michael Coleman and James Morrison, and he absorbed the rich musical traditions of his local area.
Hearne's fiddle playing was characterized by its rhythmic drive, ornamentation, and expressive interpretation of tunes. He possessed a deep understanding of the Sligo style and was known for his ability to impart that knowledge to younger musicians. He taught fiddle both privately and at workshops, contributing significantly to the preservation and continuation of the tradition.
Although he did not record commercially during his lifetime, recordings of his playing circulated widely among musicians and enthusiasts. He was a popular performer at sessions and festivals, where he shared his music with audiences throughout Ireland and beyond.
Hughie Hearne's legacy endures through his students and the numerous musicians who were inspired by his playing. He is remembered as one of the great Sligo fiddlers of his generation.
