WUSA (TV)
WUSA (TV), virtual channel 9 (UHF digital channel 34), is a CBS-affiliated television station licensed to Washington, D.C., United States. The station is owned by Tegna Inc. WUSA's studios are located on Brandywine Street NW in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and its transmitter is located in the city's Spring Valley section.
The station's history dates back to 1949 when it signed on the air as WOIC, owned by Bamberger Broadcasting, then a division of R.H. Macy & Company. It became WTOP-TV in 1950, reflecting the ownership of the Washington Post and CBS. Under CBS ownership, it became a highly-rated and respected news operation. In 1978, as part of a deal that saw the Post acquiring full ownership of the station, CBS sold WTOP-TV to the Evening News Association (ENA), publishers of The Detroit News. The station was subsequently renamed WDVM-TV, reflecting the market area of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
In 1986, the Gannett Company acquired WDVM-TV from ENA. As Gannett already owned a television station in the Washington market, the FCC required Gannett to sell one of the stations. Gannett opted to keep WDVM-TV and sell its other station. The station's call letters were changed to WUSA-TV on July 4, 1986. The "USA" in the call letters was intended to represent the station's location in the nation's capital. The station then dropped the "-TV" suffix at a later point.
WUSA's news coverage focuses on the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, providing local news, weather, and sports reporting. It also airs CBS network programming and syndicated programs.
