Kassopaia

Kassopaia (also spelled Cassopeia, Cassopaea, or Kassope) was an ancient city in Epirus, located in present-day northwestern Greece. It was the capital city of the Kassopaeans, one of the three major tribes of Epirus, the others being the Molossians and the Thesprotians.

The city was strategically located on a high plateau overlooking the Ambracian Gulf and the Ionian Sea, providing natural defenses and control of trade routes. Kassopaia flourished from the 4th century BC until its abandonment after the Roman conquest in 168 BC.

Archaeological excavations have revealed well-preserved remains of the city, including its fortification walls, public buildings, temples, a theatre, and private residences. The city's layout demonstrates sophisticated urban planning for the period. The theatre, in particular, is notable for its size and the quality of its construction.

Kassopaia's decline likely resulted from the Roman destruction of Epirus following the Third Macedonian War. The inhabitants were likely dispersed, and the city was never rebuilt to its former glory. The ruins of Kassopaia are now an important archaeological site, offering valuable insights into the history and culture of ancient Epirus.
