R. Shankar (politician)
R. Shankar (born 30 April 1930, died 6 October 2009) was an Indian politician who served as the 3rd Chief Minister of Kerala from 26 September 1962 to 10 September 1964. He was a member of the Indian National Congress.
Born in Puthoor, Kollam district, Kerala, Shankar played an active role in the Indian independence movement and the formation of Kerala state. He was a prominent figure in the Travancore State Congress.
Prior to becoming Chief Minister, Shankar held several important positions within the Kerala government. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister under Pattom Thanu Pillai. He was also Minister for Finance and Education.
As Chief Minister, Shankar focused on education reform and industrial development. His tenure was marked by political instability and eventually led to the collapse of his government due to a no-confidence motion.
Following his term as Chief Minister, Shankar remained active in politics. He served as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He also contributed to the growth of educational institutions in Kerala, particularly through the SNDP Yogam.
