Gaizkiñ

Gaizkiñ (pronounced roughly "guy-shkeen") is a figure from Basque mythology. The name literally translates to "evil doer" or "bad seed" in the Basque language (Euskara). Gaizkiñak are generally considered to be evil spirits or demons who bring misfortune, disease, and death. They are often associated with storms, darkness, and the wildness of nature.

While not as clearly defined as some other figures in Basque mythology like Mari, Gaizkiñak represent a broad category of malevolent beings. They can manifest in various forms and are often blamed for unexplained illnesses, accidents, and general bad luck. Some traditions associate them with specific locations, such as caves, forests, or areas considered to be liminal spaces between worlds.

Beliefs about Gaizkiñak have diminished with the decline of traditional Basque culture and the rise of modern secularism. However, remnants of these beliefs can still be found in rural areas, where superstitions about malevolent spirits persist. Historically, various protective measures, including prayers, rituals, and the use of talismans, were employed to ward off the influence of Gaizkiñak.
