Gogarty
Gogarty is a surname of Irish origin. It is an anglicized form of the Gaelic surname Ó Gógartaigh, meaning "descendant of Gógartach." The personal name Gógartach is derived from gog meaning "inclination" or "desire" and artach meaning "noble" or "bear-like."
Historically, the Gogarty family were prominent in County Westmeath. The name is still relatively common in Ireland, particularly in that region.
Oliver St. John Gogarty (1878-1957) was a well-known Irish poet, author, surgeon, athlete, and politician. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal as Buck Mulligan in James Joyce's novel Ulysses.
