Diamond Peak (Idaho)

Diamond Peak is a mountain summit located in Custer County, Idaho, within the Lost River Range. It reaches an elevation of 12,216 feet (3,723 meters), making it the seventh-highest peak in Idaho.

Geography and Geology

Diamond Peak is characterized by its rugged, glaciated terrain. It lies within the White Cloud Wilderness, an area known for its pristine alpine lakes, cirques, and U-shaped valleys carved by ancient glaciers. The peak is primarily composed of granite and other igneous rocks.

Recreation

Diamond Peak is a popular destination for mountaineers and experienced hikers. Climbing Diamond Peak involves challenging routes with significant elevation gain and potential exposure. The climbing season is generally from late June to September, depending on snow conditions. Backpacking and camping are also common activities in the surrounding wilderness area, but require adherence to Leave No Trace principles.

Ecology

The slopes of Diamond Peak support a variety of alpine flora and fauna. Vegetation consists primarily of hardy grasses, wildflowers, and stunted trees adapted to the harsh climate. Wildlife includes mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, and various bird species.
