Arakichō

Arakichō (荒木町) is a district located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. It is known for its traditional, somewhat nostalgic atmosphere, characterized by narrow alleyways, wooden buildings, and a large number of small bars and restaurants.

Arakichō retains a character reminiscent of the pre-war period, surviving the extensive bombings of Tokyo during World War II better than many other areas of the city. The area was historically a hanamachi (geisha district), although that aspect has largely faded over time.

Today, Arakichō is a popular destination for those seeking a quiet and intimate drinking and dining experience away from the more bustling areas of Shinjuku. The establishments range from traditional Japanese restaurants and sake bars to more modern wine bars and international cuisine options. Many of the bars are small and owner-operated, fostering a close-knit community feel.
