Tragula
Tragula refers to a genus of mouse-deer, specifically the Tragulus genus, belonging to the family Tragulidae. These are small, even-toed ungulates found in Southeast Asia. Often described as the smallest hoofed mammals in the world, they are distinguished by their diminutive size, arched backs, and lack of horns or antlers. Instead of horns, male Tragulus possess elongated canine teeth that protrude from their mouths, which they use for fighting and defense.
Tragulus mouse-deer are typically solitary and nocturnal animals, inhabiting dense forests and thickets near water sources. Their diet consists primarily of fruits, leaves, and other vegetation. They are generally shy and elusive, making them difficult to observe in the wild.
The classification of species within the Tragulus genus has been subject to revision, with some former subspecies being elevated to full species status based on genetic and morphological data. Conservation status varies across different species of Tragulus, with some being classified as Least Concern and others as Data Deficient or Near Threatened due to habitat loss and hunting.
