Communist Party of Portugal (Marxist–Leninist)

The Communist Party of Portugal (Marxist–Leninist) (Portuguese: Partido Comunista de Portugal (Marxista-Leninista), PCP(M-L)) is a Portuguese political party adhering to Marxism-Leninism. It was founded in 1974, shortly before the Carnation Revolution, as a split from the Portuguese Marxist-Leninist Communist Organization (OCMLP).

The PCP(M-L) identifies with the legacy of Joseph Stalin and Enver Hoxha, and has historically been considered a Hoxhaist party. It differentiates itself from other communist parties in Portugal by its strong condemnation of revisionism and its advocacy for a centralised, planned economy.

Following the Carnation Revolution, the party was involved in various political activities, including labor movements and student activism. However, its electoral support has remained marginal throughout its history. The PCP(M-L) has consistently criticized the policies of successive Portuguese governments, advocating for a more radical socialist transformation of society.

The party publishes a newspaper called Unidade Popular (People's Unity) and continues to be active in promoting its ideology through political rallies, publications, and online platforms. The PCP(M-L) maintains a presence within the Portuguese communist movement, though its influence is significantly smaller than that of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). The party emphasizes class struggle and the need for a proletarian revolution to overthrow capitalism and establish a socialist state.
