HMS Inconstant (1868)

HMS Inconstant was a screw frigate of the British Royal Navy, launched in 1868. She was notable for being the fastest warship afloat at the time of her commissioning, a title she held until the advent of torpedo boats. Inconstant was designed by Edward James Reed, the Chief Constructor of the Royal Navy, and represented a transition in warship design from wooden construction to iron and steel.

Inconstant was built at Pembroke Dockyard and commissioned in 1869. She was classified as a "cruiser" despite her frigate designation, reflecting a shift in naval terminology. Her armament consisted primarily of muzzle-loading rifled guns. She was renowned for her speed, achieving a top speed of over 16 knots during trials, a considerable feat for a vessel of her size and type.

Throughout her active career, Inconstant served in various roles, including as flagship on the North America and West Indies Station. She also participated in several fleet reviews and other ceremonial duties.

In 1883, Inconstant was converted into a training ship and renamed Impregnable III, serving in this capacity until 1906. She was finally sold for scrap in 1920, marking the end of her long and varied service to the Royal Navy. Inconstant represented a significant development in warship technology and her speed and capabilities made her a noteworthy vessel of her era.
