Jack Ox

Jack Ox (born October 1, 1943, Philadelphia, PA; died April 9, 2005, New York City) was an American artist known primarily for her synaesthetic paintings, particularly those based on musical scores. Ox developed a system for translating musical structures into visual elements, creating abstract paintings that aimed to visually represent the sounds and structures of compositions. This process involved analyzing scores and assigning colors, shapes, and spatial arrangements to various musical elements like pitch, rhythm, and harmony.

Ox referred to her approach as "structural painting" and considered her work a form of visual music. She collaborated with composers and musicians, often focusing on complex and atonal music. Her paintings were not intended to be representational depictions of specific performances but rather visualizations of the underlying compositional structure. She worked extensively with microtonal music, notably the work of composer Ivor Darreg.

Ox also explored computer-based methods for translating music into visual form and was involved in the early development of digital art. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, and she has lectured and written extensively on her synaesthetic approach to art. Her contributions have been significant in the fields of synaesthesia, visual music, and computer art.
