Bulgarus

Bulgarus (c. 1085 – 1166) was a prominent Italian jurist, one of the "Four Doctors" (Quattuor Doctores) of the law school at Bologna who revived the study of Roman law in the 12th century. His colleagues were Martinus Gosia, Jacobus de Boragine, and Hugo de Porta Ravennate.

Bulgarus was known for his precise and rigorous interpretation of the Justinian Code. He emphasized the importance of the literal meaning of the text and opposed the more equitable and discretionary approach advocated by Martinus. This emphasis on strict textual interpretation is sometimes referred to as the "Bulgarian school" of legal thought.

He contributed significantly to the development of legal methodology and the systematic analysis of Roman law. His glosses, annotations, and commentaries on the Corpus Juris Civilis were influential in shaping the development of legal scholarship and practice across Europe. He taught and mentored many students who went on to become prominent legal figures themselves. His teachings are a key component in the study of the resurgence of interest in Roman law that occurred during the medieval period.
