USS Verdin (ASR-17)

USS Verdin (ASR-17) was a Chanticleer-class submarine rescue ship of the United States Navy. She was named for the verdin, a small bird of the southwestern United States.

Verdin was laid down on 23 April 1945 by the Moore Dry Dock Company in Oakland, California, launched on 25 January 1946, sponsored by Mrs. James V. Forrestal, and commissioned on 1 December 1946, Commander John H. Spahr in command.

Following shakedown, Verdin operated along the West Coast, primarily engaged in submarine rescue exercises and salvage operations. She provided support services to submarines and divers, and participated in the development of new deep-sea rescue equipment.

In 1951, Verdin deployed to the Far East, supporting United Nations forces during the Korean War. She provided rescue services and conducted salvage operations in Korean waters. After the war, she continued to operate in the Pacific, participating in various exercises and providing support to the fleet.

Throughout her career, Verdin underwent several overhauls and modernizations. She was equipped with advanced diving and salvage equipment, including a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) support capability later in her service.

Verdin was decommissioned on 30 September 1991 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 24 February 1992. She was subsequently sold for scrap.

Verdin earned one battle star for her Korean War service.
