Maxixe (dance)
The Maxixe is a ballroom dance, developed in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil around 1910. It originated as a combination of several other dances, primarily the polka, the habanera, and the Brazilian tango. Characterized by its fast tempo and close embrace, it was considered scandalous at the time due to its intimate nature and energetic movements.
The Maxixe is typically danced to 2/4 music and incorporates quick steps, kicks, and dips. It requires a high degree of coordination and agility from both dancers. The dance became popular in Europe and the United States in the early 20th century, often being adapted to suit local tastes and sensibilities. While its popularity waned after the 1920s, the Maxixe remains an important part of Brazilian dance history and is still performed by enthusiasts today. Its influence can be seen in later forms of Latin American dance.
