Kapu (caste)

The Kapu are a large agrarian caste primarily found in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The term "Kapu" broadly translates to "cultivator" or "farmer." They are a heterogeneous group, comprising various sub-castes and social groups.

Historically, the Kapus were a dominant agricultural community, wielding considerable social and political influence in their regions. Their economic strength stemmed from land ownership and control over agricultural resources.

In modern Andhra Pradesh, the Kapus are a significant demographic group. They have actively participated in state politics, advocating for their interests and seeking greater representation in government and administration. Over time, the Kapu community has experienced internal stratification and varying levels of socio-economic development.

The term "Kapu" sometimes encompasses related communities like Telaga, Balija, and Ontari, although distinctions and relationships between these groups are complex and subject to varying interpretations. There have been movements within the Kapu community to consolidate these groups under a single Kapu identity.

The Kapus have been involved in debates and agitations regarding caste-based reservations in education and employment. Their demands for inclusion in the Backward Classes category have been a recurrent issue in Andhra Pradesh politics.
